Outlive by Peter Attia
Outlive is essentially a blueprint for increasing one’s own longevity, not only in lifespan but in wellness, which is arguably much more important (what’s the point in living 90 years as a vegetable?).
I enjoyed the book because Attia’s character shows in the writing style, both in the consistent boxing and race car driving metaphors as well as in his opinions about modern healthcare. This brings the book more dimension in pages where it could read more like a lecture; who wants to be lectured on how to live better?
The final section on emotional wellbeing is especially compelling because it’s equal parts a cautionary tale and Attia’s own personal reflection on the downfall of his own emotional health. This chapter served as a reminder to me personally that longevity means nothing if life doesn’t involve happiness. That’s arguably the key component, as any well-lived individual has a strong unit of friends and family within the vicinity.
